WorkBC and WelcomeBC - UI
WorkBC
British Columbia’s Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training created WorkBC to help users navigate B.C.’s labour market. The site is a one stop shop for job seekers both young and old and although it went through a very successful redesign a few years back, the client wanted some additional improvements made to the site to help users access the full array of resources they offer. Working in close collaboration with the UX lead, using a modular based design approach, we created a series of flexible templates for use throughout the site.
WelcomeBC
WelcomeBC (WorkBC's sister site) helps newcomers navigate the immigration process and get settled into their new lives. Although the site contained a lot of useful information—complex navigation, redundant content and an outdated site design made it difficult for users to find what they needed. Our solution was a responsive redesign that could accommodate updated content and a streamline navigation system that would help users access WelcomeBC's valuable content much more efficiently.
Challenge
Both WorkBC and WelcomeBC needed to leverage the same page templates and were being designed and developed sequentially, WorkBC first followed immediately by WelcomeBC. This presented a challenge on multiple fronts, beyond logistical challenges in terms of planning and scheduling timely hand offs. From a design perspective our greatest challenge was about content, we wondered whether it was possible for one template to accommodate two very different sets of content, much of which had yet to be written. To this end we focused on using a modular based design approach that would be flexible enough to accommodate a diverse array of content and that would also be scalable over time.
Then there was the visual challenge of how to keep both sites distinct even though their foundations would be the same. Imagery, colour and tone of voice were used to differentiate the two sites. Having addressed these challenges we hoped to create two beautifully streamlined sites that would help both work seekers, and new arrivals find the information they need easily, while also encouraging them to explore different areas of the site.
