Eat Your Greens! - Mobile App (Concept)
Context
Eat Your Greens! is a fresh produce finder app designed to help combat food deserts in urban areas. This is an ongoing personal project sparked by my experience working with children and families as a Social Worker in the South Bronx.
Challenge
The lack of access to healthy foods, especially in urban areas, is an issue in many States in the U.S. but especially problematic in New York City. New York is littered with “food deserts”, areas where access to healthy and fresh (non processed) foods is very limited, if available at all. According to foodispower.org “an estimated 750,000 New York City residents live in food deserts, while about 3 million people live in places where stores that sell fresh produce are few or far between.” East Harlem, parts of Brooklyn, and the Bronx are worst effected.
Process
To address this problem, even in a small way, I came up with the idea of creating an app that could tell you where to find fresh fruits and vegetables based on your current location. A tool that could help you access fresh produce throughout the year, while also providing information about how to use that produce, in addition to providing healthy eating tips. I chose to focus specifically on produce because it is most difficult to come by in urban food deserts and because eating fresh fruits and vegetables contributes most to weight loss, which can help people stay healthy and reduces their risk of chronic disease, including diabetes and heart disease and stroke.
